FN FiveseveN
Designed as a companion piece to the FN P90 submachine gun, the Fiveseven is chambered in 5.7x28mm. This caliber moves a .22-caliber bullet out of the barrel at 2100 feet per second, offering rifle velocity out of a pistol. This caliber was created by FN for the new NATO PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) concept, a design specification being the ability to punch through NATO standard body armor at 150 meters.
The FiveseveN is very lightweight, has very little recoil, and holds twenty rounds in the magazine. It represents a radical new approach to personal defense weapons, and the established gun writers out there have split opinions on the 5.7x28 system. Some deride it as worthless, claiming that the 5.7x28 has the terminal ballistics of a .22 Magnum at best, and some claim the cartridge to be the best thing since the invention of the metallic cartridge.
As in all things, opinions are worth exactly what you pay for them. In the end, the street performance of the 5.7x28 will be the final word on the issue, and so far, the round has acquitted itself well. During the Japanese embassy crisis in Peru, several terrorists were eliminated through their Level III body armor, including the ring leader, who expired after a single round to the chest. Several SWAT shootings with the round have all resulted in one-shot stops. It seems that the 5.7x28 largely lives up to FN's claims.
I like this pistol because it combines low recoil and high capacity with excellent barrier and terminal performance, all in a lightweight and corrosion-resistant package. It's a whole new and interesting approach to personal weaponry, and as such deserves merit for sheer ingenuity. "

AN OVERVIEW OF THE FN P90 SUBMACHINE by Tony L. Jones
fnp90: "AN OVERVIEW OF THE FN P90 SUBMACHINE
By Tony L. Jones
Times are changing very quickly for police agencies. Criminals today are more determined, not afraid of the judicial system, better armed, and well equipped with items such as personal body armor, radios, and protective (gas) masks. As a result, agencies are expressing the need for lightweight, compact, ambidextrous, and easy to use weapons which fire a cartridge that will be effective against the modern criminal, but not pose the liability risk of a rifle. FN Herstal took notice and developed a weapon system called the FN P90 Submachine Gun to address all of these issues.
This weapon system may be classified as a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW), which is typically a military designation, or as an entry/containment weapon useful in the law enforcement arena.
I seized the opportunity to observe, handle and fire the FN P90 at the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI) Regional Conference held in Dayton, Ohio, this past July. I readily admit the futuristic design left me somewhat skeptical; however, my skepticism dissolved after firing only a handful of ammunition. The more I fired the FN P90, the more I admired its futuristic design and unique capabilities.
I will discuss the FN P90s unique characteristics by focusing on the following categories in order to logically discuss the weapon: ergonomics, mechanism, safety, ejection, magazine, versions, sighting system, ammunition, maintenance, and accessories.
Ergonomics: The FN P90 is very compact (the overall length is 19.7 inches; the width is only 2.2 inches; and the height, including the optical sight, is 8.3 inches). The entire weapon system only weighs 6.6 pounds with a completely loaded 50 round magazine affixed. Not only are the dimensions"

1) Only available round (I can get) for this caliber was the SS192 that has no expansion for hunting and is worthless as a defensive round. A friend of mine shot a Havelina with one and the exit wound (after he killed it with his .41 mag) from the SS192 was barely larger than the entry, didnt even make it jump.
2) Ammo was becoming less and less available, prices were doubling every week. Not very cost effective if I wanted to become proficient with it.
3) The release of the SS196 kept on getting pushed further back. Besides, what can I do with a 40gr bullet at 1600 fps that my .357 and its 125gr bullet traveling 1450 fps or a 115gr 9mm going 1350 fps isnt going to do better?
Since there was no data available anywhere that I could find, I grabbed my book and started looking at cartridges that were close to this one. Published info that I had found was that powder charge of 6.5 grs, using a very small-grained ball powder propels the 31gr bullet at a measured 2329 fps from the P-90s 9.8 barrel. Okay. Some of the best velocity vs pressure for the 22 Hornet and 218 Bee use Hodgdon H110. Hey, I have some of that I used to use in my .357 and .44. Wow, thats the smallest grain ball powder I have ever seen. Ill try it
Since 10gr of H110 push a 40 grain bullet 2570 fps out of a 22 Hornet and the SS196s are supposed to go 1600fps, I loaded two rounds each of 5.75, 6.0, 6.25, and 6.5 grains. Grabbed the chrono and a friend to catch the brass for me (only had 99 then) and went out. First round at 5.75 fired showed 840 fps, case flopped out like a fish. There was also some pretty heavy recoil, primer fine. Second round fired showed error, case barely made "

GameKing Bullets are designed for hunting at long range, where their extra margin of performance can make the critical difference. The streamlined tapered base of the boat tail greatly reduces drag, which results in higher retained velocity, greater striking energy, a flatter trajectory and less wind drift than comparable flat base bullets."

SU-16D Rifle
SU-16D Rifle: "KEL-TEC 5.56 mm SU-16D PERSONAL SECURITY RIFLE
The SU-16D is currently available in two models D9 and D12. The SU-16D12 has a longer barrel for higher velocity and can also accept a standard M-9 bayonet, or more appropriately, our new light weight, folding bayonet.
The SU-16D is a gas operated, semi-automatic rifle in 5.56 mm NATO caliber. The barrel and chamber are chrome lined. The 'Delta' model rifles are intended as a personal weapon for non-infantry military personnel, special operations, SWAT law enforcement, and civilians in high risk environments. The SU-16D is especially suited for low intensity urban combat such as ambush response from inside a vehicle. or fighting in confined spaces.
The concept of replacing the pistol with a carbine in military units is not new. Nowadays, the intermediate power 5.56 mm round and modern polymer materials make it possible to achieve a weapon of a size and weight only marginally larger than a service pistol.
The SU-16D9 is less than 20 folded, weighs 4.7 lbs loaded with 30 rounds and has a practical range of over 300 m.
The SU-16D has a conventional gas piston operation and utilizes the proven M-16 breech locking system. The reciprocating bolt handle also functions as a case deflector. The rear sight is zeroed at 250 m and adjustable for windage. The front sight is of M-16 type. Two integrated Picatinny rails will accept a multitude of standard accessories. Except for barrel, bolt, sights and mechanism the SU-16 is made entirely of high impact, glass fiber reinforced polymer."

FN FiveSeven
The next pistol to be tested around here is the new FN FiveSeven 'USG' model. This pistol holds 20 rounds of 5.7 x 28 mm. It has a light rail and adjustable sights. The safety is in an unusual spot, above the trigger as shown in the picture above, and the magzine release can be moved to the other side of the gun. Since slides should be released by grasping the slide with the support side hand, pulling back and releasing, it doesn't much matter which side the built-in slide release is on.
Although ammunition is hard to find, and expensive, the 5.7 offers some unique attributes: high magazine capacity, low recoil, good sights, good ergonomics, and ease of operation (different from ergonomics...). The 5.7 has a reputation among those politicians with low IQs and reading skills as being a dangerous, because it will fire a round that can go through body armor. It is a military pistol that was designed to have this capability. Those of us who shoot as a hobby have no interest in this capability, but rather are intrigued by the flat shooting characteristics of the round. A pistol that can hit at 100 or even 200 meters is interesting, because most pistols don't do well at longer ranges. For personal defense, the 5.7 caliber may or may not be a good idea. We know that all pistol rounds are weak when compared with shotguns and rifles, and the 5.7 will not be an exception to that general rule. On the other hand, bullet placement is a key to an effective defensive shooting capability. The 5.7 should be very good in that respect, and a 20 round magazine and low recoil offers the chance to place several bullets in the same time another heavier caliber pistol's front sight would be coming back on target.

fnp90: "FN Herstal USA, Inc.
There is one new player in the game and that is the firm of FN Herstal, doing business in the USA as FN Herstal USA, Inc. If this name sounds familiar, its because this company has been building the Browning designed High Power since its inception in 1935. FNH has spent the last three years surveying the U.S. law enforcement market and is now ready to deliver its new P90 Bullpup design submachine pistol, as well as a new handgun, the Five-Seven Pistol, with a capacity of 20 rounds. Both are chambered for a new cartridge as well the 5.7 x 28mm round.
As to the efficacy of the new cartridge, FNH officials point out that, in the SMG, the bullet penetrates 48 layers (!!) of Kevlar at 100 meters. (The ammunition is restricted to law enforcement sales only.) FN also has double-action-only, full-size and compact versions of the High Power, now only offered in 9mm. The FNH police shotgun is a pump action 12-gauge with a three inch chamber, blade front and open elevation adjustable rear sight, synthetic furniture and a parkerized type finish. FNH has also gone into the law enforcement training business, allying themselves with Crucible, a training corporation with an 88 acre facility in Northen Virginia. "

FN FiveseveN Forums - Problem with ejecting case or cycling...
Rnelson11's notes...
FN FiveseveN Forums - Problem with ejecting case or cycling...: "I've been off work a couple of days so I've spent a lot of time trying to address this problem. I started a new tread because I have a bit of new information.
First, I've had a few cases that extended out of the barrel further than the factory rounds but if I lube them well they are almost exactly the same as factory (.128'-.130'). I had one that was .164' and the breech would not fully close so the firing pin only slightly marked it. When this happens the slide sticks back about 1/16' and the round does not fire. But let me also say that an extended shoulder is not the only thing that will cause this (read on).
I had 20 rounds loaded today (10-35gr V-Max w/6.6gr of HS-6 and 10-40gr V-Maxw/6.7gr of HS-6) so I rode down to the woods to test them. I shot 5 of the 35 gr bullets and only 2 ejected so I saved the rest to check when I got back to the house. I shot 9 of the 40 gr bullets (the primer fell out of one) and only about half ejected. These cases have been fired about 8 times using a lot of different powder weights.
When I got to the house I started checking the rounds and noticed that the rims were beaten up pretty bad. I checked them with my micrometer and they were as much as .313' diameter, the factory rounds were .304'. I assume they flattened and pancaked from slamming against the breech when fired. I also noticed several with deep cuts which I assume came from being ejected. I spun the remaining 5 on a file and got then back to about .304'-.305' and de-burred the top and bottom of the rim. I went back to the woods and all 5 rounds fired and ejected.
I think that the damaged and 'pancaked' rims are preventing the ejection lever (hook) from catching the rim when trying to jerk the casing out at high speed. I say t"

FN FiveseveN Forums - An Unconventional Pistol
FN FiveseveN Forums - An Unconventional Pistol: An Unconventional Pistol
--------------
Fabrique Nationale, a firearm developer located in Herstal, Belgium, has been designing guns for over a century and supplying them to nearly every country in the world. One of their latest offerings, the 5.7mm Five-seveN pistol, is remarkably different than anything else of its kind. The most significant advantages incorporated in the Five-seveN are the ammunition, accuracy, weight, and size. The Five-seveN uses the 5.7x28mm ammunition designed by FN for their P-90 sub-machine gun. This means that the Five-seveN’s bullet is 5.7 millimeters thick and the shell is 28 millimeters long. Conventional pistols usually use 9x19mm or 10x21mm bullets that are effective for stopping an individual in ordinary circumstances. However, if that individual is wearing even a light Kevlar vest, these bullets will be stopped with little damage inflicted, and body armor is currently in use with over 50% of the world’s armed forces. For law enforcement officers, the ability to pierce body armor is also needed, as it is worn by an increasing number of criminals. The FN 5.7mm bullet when used in the Five-seveN pistol is perfectly fitted to these needs. It will pierce a US Army vest at 300 meters range, and a US Army helmet at 240 meters range*. Despite these figures, the 5.7mm round weighs half as much as a 9mm round and produces roughly half the recoil. The 5.7mm round of the Five-seveN has been designed to effectively incapacitate the target, but there has been controversy from skeptics over whether it is capable. Conventional hollow-point bullets rely on expansion to create a large wound, but the 5.7mm is made to hit the target, travel a few inches, then turn point upwards while inside the target and continue traveling in this manner. This means that the wound it creates would be as tall as the length of the projectile—a little over twenty-one millimeters or nearly one inch. The greatest argument in favor of the Five-seveN’s wounding ability is its performance in shootings. Anyone shot with a 5.7mm bullet has died immediately. Currently there have been over a dozen shootings with the 5.7x28mm round. Skeptics argue that this isn't a large enough sample to make any conclusions. The negligible recoil produced by the 5.7x28mm makes the Five-seveN remarkably accurate out to a range of 100 meters. The firer also has many chances to hit the target because the capacity of the weapon is also a vast improvement over other pistols. It holds twenty rounds of ammunition. But despite this capacity and the unusual length of its bullets, the Five-seveN is an incredibly light pistol, weighing 1.6 pounds loaded—only 70% as much as other plastic pistols and 50% as much as metal pistols. The Five-seveN is also reasonably compact, being the same size as comparable pistols that hold half as many cartridges of shorter length! It can be seen that the advantages incorporated in the FN Five-seveN make it an effective, if unusual, pistol.

FN FiveseveN Forums - Stargate sling for the P90
FN FiveseveN Forums - Stargate sling for the P90: "Well, for those of you that want an opinion of how the sling works.. I use a P90 when I play airsoft, and I do use the P90 sling. Where I play there are lots of mountains, hills, river beds, and of course the occasional baracades.
I can tell you that carrying the P90 with this sling is very useful.
#1 - Since the weight is distributed around my whole body, the gun never becomes heavy, or the sling never rubs against my neck.
#2 - Since the weapon is in front of my body, I can bring it up to a shooting position quite easily, or let it drop when not using it.
If you guys have any other questions.. I will be more than happy to answer them.
