Subject: FN Five-seveN barrels
Hi,

I've been looking for a factory/custom barrel for the FN Five-seveN (IOM or USG model) and Kel from Gemtech recently posted the following at http://www.subguns.com/boards/mgmsgarchive.cgi?noframes;read=433098 I am _very_ interested in this option, since the others appear to be infeasable.

Gemtech partnered up with Jarvis (www.jarvis-custom.com) to do a run of 5.7x28 pistol barrels, done exactly like the factory ones (and I do mean "ones", as apparently we've got one of the, like, half-dozen or so real ones in the country...).

The barrel job took a backseat for some other priorities we had late last year, but Bill Jarvis recently told me they should have the barrels done right after SHOT Show.

Suggestion: Call Jarvis, get on a wait list if he's running one. There's
not going to be a ton of them, it's very possibly a one-time run unless demand is suprising.

Ar15.Com Thread on SS195, SS196, SS192

Short version: The primary difference between the SS195 and SS192 is the lead-free primer that has been implemented in the newer cartridge.

Ar15.Com thread on cleaning the Five-seveN

Shotgun187:
So, the operators manual advises against using any type of lubricant or cleaner that has teflon, etc. in it. What does everyone use to clean and lube their Five-seveNs?

GunBanExtremist:
SLIP2000

Beerswimmer:
Breakfree :-) [Ed - probably a joke, but included for completeness]

txalan:
Hoppes, then Gun Scrubber on the barrel only, then synthetic Gun Lube wipedown. I figure since they make it, FN must know something about its upkeep. No teflon for me on the 57, thanks. I use it elsewhere, on my other guns.

pillbox:
Mpro7 is a good cleaner for such pistols, its also sold as Hoppe's
Elite...its the new military spec and is teflon free/non toxic/dont have a smell. Its also used by LAPD, and Heckler&Kochhttp://www.mpro7.com/
they make four basic products
1.Bore cleaner...darn good stuff that will get stuff out of barrels
previosly thought to be clean!
2. Mil spec CLP
3.synthetic gun oil
4.Bore gel....its like the bore cleaner, but has the concistancy of
honey
I use all of them and im totally happy

Email conversation with Ron Reed - preliminary reloading info for 5.7x28mm

We won't be tooled up to make or re-load the 5.7x28 until FNH decides to release the brass. Needless to say we have done some development work with several powders, but all the powders we used are not "over the counter" type powders.

Bullets for subsonic loads will most likely be in the 55g+ weight. I feel the 55g V-Max from Hornady will make an excellent hunting/SD load if loaded at about 1000FPS. We will have standard reloading dies available soon, if you like I'll shoot you an e-mail when they arrive. Water capacity for the 5.7x28 is 10.5g, capacity for the .22 Hornet is 13.5; That should give you a general idea of where to start on your loading.

Later, Ron added:

Feel free to include my responses and contact info where ever you like. I spoke with a customer today that has found that the 35g V-Max with 6.9-7.1g of AA#9 1.350" OAL duplicates the factory velocity. The problem is that you have to stay in that .3g area, as less causes detonation and more of course is over pressure. I have no verification of this load so be cautious, and it is only intended for information purposes. [Ed - emphasis added]

A bit later, Ron added:

The dies are in 69.00 per set.

Excerpt from Annual Report on International Efforts toProhibit Military Small Arms by W. Hays Parks

Excerpt:

For several reasons, the United States has expressed its opposition to the Swiss small arms proposal:
The Swiss argument focuses on bullet yaw. This is not a new phenomenon. The latest technologies and scientific advances, many of which were developed by Colonel Martin L. Fackler, MC, USA, (Ret.), including his wound ballistics methodology, establish that virtually every military rifle projectile used since 1899, whether Spitzer or round-nosed (such as the Italian Carcano), yaws in soft tissue depending on a variety of circumstances. Most will fragment at closer ranges. For example, the U.S. 5.56x45mm M193 and M855 (NATO SS-109) begin their yaw after traveling an average of eleven to twelve centimeters in soft tissue. Seventy per cent will yaw at twelve centimeters. Fifteen per cent will yaw sooner, while fifteen per cent will yaw later. The Swiss proposal makes undue use of variation in effect, incorrectly offering early yaw as the average and as the threshold for determining legality. Under the Swiss argument, the fifteen per cent that yaw early are presented as the norm, which they argue is illegal. 7 It is an arbitrary standard badly skewed and misrepresented to make their case to the less informed.

7 While initially stating that their methodology would not ban any existing military projectile, Swiss papers suggest that the Russian 5.45x39mm AK-74 would be illegal. Swiss representatives also have informed the French that their 5.56x45mm most certainly would be banned. Questions offered at the 2001 wound ballistics workshop (using the Swiss criteria) cast in doubt personal defense weapons (PDW) such as Fabrique Nationale’s 5.7x28mm round, and Heckler & Koch’s 4.6x30mm round, neither of which approaches the lethality of the 5.56x45mm NATO SS-109. For an assessment of the PDW, see Charles M. Hayes, “Personal Defense Weapons – Answer in Search of a Question?,” Wound Ballistic Review 5,1 (Spring 2001), pp. 30-36.

5.7 X 28 reload data.

[Ed - The following information was posted by Guest on the FiveseveN Forum. I have not personally tested it. Follow all instructions and notes to the letter. Use at your own risk. ]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I sent off a request to a powder manufacture, and here is the response I have received:

Unfortunately we do not have any specific tested data on this powder caliber combination.

(see notes 1.1 and 2.1 below).

However, I can provide you with some guideline, based on calculations and information from other sources.

Caution: This is an extremely sensitive and unforgiving caliber. Its very sensitive to any change in bullet weight, design, COL etc.
Important Notes:

We strongly recommend to:

1) Take note of points 1 and 2 below.

2) Measure the velocity, compare with the data and get back with us, so that we can work together to optimize the load for our conditions.

Caliber: 5.7x28 FN.

Barrel length: 5" - FN Five -SeveN.

Barrel length: 10" - FN P90.

Powder: AA 9.

Bullet weight: 35grains. V-Max

Start load: 6.8 grains (5" - 1700 - 1800 ft/p/sec) (10" - 2400 - 2500ft/p/sec)

Maximum load: 7.8 grains (1900 _ 2000 Ft/p/sec). (10" - 2400 - 2500ft/p/sec)

Bullet weight: 40 grains. V-Max

Start load: 6.5 grains (1600 - 1700 ft/p/sec) (10" - 2300 - 2400ft/p/sec)

Maximum load: 7.5 grains (1800 - 1900 Ft/p/sec). (10" - 2300 - 2400ft/p/sec)

NOTE:

It’ important to note that:

Whenever Accurate Arms do not test, and have actual data, on a particular caliber or caliber/bullet combination, we may in some cases provide some guideline. This information will be based on various procedures and calculations, or from other very reliable sources.

1. SAFETY is our prime concern therefore:

1.1. The loading data is conservative, especially regarding the minimum or start load to ensure a safe baseline to work from.

1.2. The safety margin built into the start load might be more than the customary 10%.

2. We strongly recommend.

2.1. To always start at the recommended minimum "START" load.

2.2. If at all possible, measure the velocity.

2.3. Contact us again with the velocity data, so that we can verify, and correlate with our calculated/estimated data. The data should also be compared, with the typical velocity levels accepted in the industry, for that particular caliber-bullet weight combination.
