70-80 grain loads

I still have some data on my 69 grain loads from the old site, but I finally have some new data for my 77 grain loads. I have been testing out some heavy subsonic loads for use with a suppressor in both the handgun and the rifle. Ever since I bought some Lapua 69 grain Scenar BTHP for a .223, however I had always wondered, every time I saw them on my reloading bench, about loading them in a 5.7x28 cartarige. One day I couldn't ressist. I found a good load for the 69.6 grain Lapua with 3.4 grn of Power pistol, a BR CCI Small Rifle primer. It grouped well and was very quiet out of the suppressor on the handgun.

well guys i think i have finally come up with the perfect fox/small game rifle cartridge combo.
the rifle is the cz 527, originaly in 22 hornet. we chambered it for the 5.7X28 fn round necked down to 17 caliber.
as you guys know i have harvested a fox or two in my life. this brought me to the conclusion, a 20/25 grain 17 caliber bullet traveling at 3000 fps will go in and not come out. thus preserving the value of the fur without becoming a seamstress, i hate sewing up holes.
the 17x28 produces 3000+ with both bullets on less than 10 grains of powder. that translates into 700 shots per pound of powder. thst makes it about as cost effective as the 17 hmr but with real slam there butts into the ground performance.

the 17x28 is a version of paul rodgers 4.4X28, based on the FN 5.7X28 machine gun and pistol round. basicly it's a 17 ccm on viagra or a limp 17 ah. the cartridge may very well be the best fox round. if the case will deliver 3000 fps with a 25 gr bullet, it will march everybodies blue dot loads for the 17 Mach 4 and 17 remington. instand death with 0 pelt damage, a fox hunters dream.

It is easy to measure, easy to handle, and when spilled on a desk, it eask to clean up. Not only that it is fairly clean and has a perfect amount of graphite on it to help with lubing the measure.

My prefered case length is 1.1345' and I try to get my OAL all the way up to 1.585'. with the longer bullets like the VMax, Nosler ballistic tip, and sierra BlitzKing, you can achieve factory length (1.585' of thereabouts). With shorter obive bullets you will have to determine your own seating depth based upon projectile length and how much of the bullet is in contact with the case throat. You must have enough of it in the case to have a uniform starting pressure. I like to make sure that my short ogive bullets are seated to the bottom of the neck, as close to flush or slightly deeper (maybe 1/500th past the neck)."

Primers started to crater at 4.3 grains and the shoulders moved about like factory rounds at 4.5 grains.
No flatening of the primers at all (I do use Locktite 609 on all primers for the 5.7x28).
I saw no signs of overpressure. The overall length of the cases increased slightly from 4.0 to 4.9 (.003 Avg) and I also checked the diameter of the case just above the rim and there was no change at all.
The lighter weight charges hit about 6' low but once I reaches 4.3 grains they started to come up closer to factory rounds.

I can not explain what happened at 4.7 grains but I plan to re-test these and go up to 5.5 grains. It is suppose to rain today so it may be next weekend before I can test anymore."

FN FiveseveN Forums - Hi!: "Reliability of the FiveseveN is phenomenal. I finally shout out the factory FiveseveN barrel a couple of weeks ago at 'only' 40,050 rounds (99% handloads). The only stoppages I had were from short ogive bullets seated too long, a few times where I didn't debur the outside of the neck enough, and one bad lot of Remington 7 1/2 br primers where 20% failed to ignite (Remington replaced the primers and recalled the lot). I had a couple of pierced primers from REALLY hot loads, but was unable to find any damage to the gun no matter what I fed it.

I have had excellent experiences with Viht 3N37, Hodgdon HS-6, and Ramshot True-Blue powders. Incidentally, I just disected a few SS195LF rounds and have determined that the powder appears to be either Ramshot True-Blue or Ramshot Zip @ precisely 6.5 grains (hard to tell without factor load data, which FN refuses to release). I loaded a few rounds about a year ago with Blue Dot, but after looking at the large amount of powder fouling (Blue Dot is a VERY dirty powder because of the large amount of graphite in it) decided not to use it any more.

The bullets to use are .224 diameter. SS195LF uses a 27.3 (average of 25 pulled SS195LF rounds) grain bullet, but I have used as heavy as 77 (longer than mag length and must be loaded singly). The 35 grain VMax is excellent, but hard to load because of its flat base. I prefer the 40grn VMax and Nosler Ballistic tip rounds because they are boat-tailed. But anything you want to use anywhere from 30-46 is pretty safe. Check the cases for excessive pressure before increasing powder weight, and of course, start low and work up to maximum. Check out the reloading forum for load data.

Cleaning of the FiveseveN is a snap, and with the correct powders I went approximately 2000 rounds between"
