well guys i think i have finally come up with the perfect fox/small game rifle cartridge combo.
the rifle is the cz 527, originaly in 22 hornet. we chambered it for the 5.7X28 fn round necked down to 17 caliber.
as you guys know i have harvested a fox or two in my life. this brought me to the conclusion, a 20/25 grain 17 caliber bullet traveling at 3000 fps will go in and not come out. thus preserving the value of the fur without becoming a seamstress, i hate sewing up holes.
the 17x28 produces 3000+ with both bullets on less than 10 grains of powder. that translates into 700 shots per pound of powder. thst makes it about as cost effective as the 17 hmr but with real slam there butts into the ground performance.

the 17x28 is a version of paul rodgers 4.4X28, based on the FN 5.7X28 machine gun and pistol round. basicly it's a 17 ccm on viagra or a limp 17 ah. the cartridge may very well be the best fox round. if the case will deliver 3000 fps with a 25 gr bullet, it will march everybodies blue dot loads for the 17 Mach 4 and 17 remington. instand death with 0 pelt damage, a fox hunters dream.

.30 Mauser Vs. 5.7mm
So what's the big deal about the 5.7mm? Years ago I had a Broomhandle Mauser. Being young and foolish--and I would not recommend this to anyone unless they did some pricey research on reloading data which wasn't available at the time -- we stuffed that bottle neck cartridge full of Bullseye and crimped in a spitzer bullet.
Needless to say it, played havoc on the trees about the old homestead and completely decimated rabbits. I seriously doubt there is any body armor that would withstand the combination. This was long before anyone came up with the idea of the .44 Magnum.
The plus side was we learned respect for firearms and it kept us outside in the fresh air and off the streets. No one ever got in any trouble with the law and we moved on to productive lives. Just maybe the fact our parents gave us the trust to know the rules, and obey them, had some bearing on the rest.

Wow! I just read Charlie Petty's excellent article on the FN Five-seveN and the new 5.7mm cartridge it was designed around. Awesome, but...
Something struck me as familiar about the 5.7x28. What could it be? Then I remembered: the "Wildcat" chapter in Cartridges of the World. There it was on page 141 of my 5th edition--the MMJ 5.7mm. Back in 1963 Melvin Johnson, the rifle and machinegun designer, had necked down a .30 carbine case for a 40 gr. .224 bullet and rechambered an M1 carbine to shoot it.
He claimed 3,000 fps from the carbine barrel with a case 33mm long. Now FN shortens the case by 5mm, uses a lighter projectile and gets lower velocity from a shorter barrel. Deja vu all over again.
It seems there really is nothing new under the sun, just lots and lots of variations on a theme.

Built the 17 version on a AR15 It aint cute but it's lots of fun! 10.5 grains of VV120 and a 18 grain berger at around 3600fps will light up a jackrabbit . Later! Mark.
17 VLD !! here are some of the 4.4x28 velocities
Matt , here are some of the velocities on the 4.4x28 . 22gr berger 10.4 gr of H4198= vel 3101 , 29gr kindler 10.4gr of H4198 = vel 2988, 20gr Berger MEF 10gr of VV120 = vel 3349 , 22.5 Genco LTFB 10.4 gr of H4198 = 2986 . I shot these out of my 19.5 inch barrel on my custom AR 15 . The 22gr bergers shot the best group . I wish I had some VV133 to try out . I will post some pics tonight, if I could get a little posting advise from some of the board members ! Thanks! Mark.

I finaly got out to do some shooting today . Been reloading and not getting to shoot much . I grabbed my 4.4x28 in AR15 and about 80 rounds of ammo , some 20grMEF bergers and some 29 gr Kindlers . The loads were 10 grains of VV120 with the 20 gr bergers and 10 grains of H4198 with the 29 gr Kindlers , sorry I have not Chronographed these loads yet but expansion was great on the PD's and cottontails I shot today. The wind died down to nothing today and made long shots fun , most were 150 to 225 yards . This PD town has lots of mesquite trees and the PD's have kinda built there town in and around them making it hard to get really long shots . Also I did most of my shooting out of the cab of my truck , Off the mirror , if you know what I mean . I really like these small calibers , you get to see your hits though the scope and you don't need hearing protection on most of them .Thanks! Mark.

AR 15 in a 5.7x28 FN (really 4.5x28)

I bought a 17HMR barrel from brownells { Clark 10/22 17HMR , 9 twist } I bushed the bolt and modifide 223 extractor . It is a blast to go to a PD town and cut loose on them . I has very mild muzzle blast and no recoil . I can shoot 16grain to 30 grain bullets with the 9 twist barrel . I had to make my own dies though and that was kind of a pain . I buit this one with a heavy barrel and it gets kinda heavy toating around , so the next one is going to be as light as I can build with maybe a tension barrel with aluminum sleeve and maybe a carbon fiber lower if I can find one . Later ! Mark.

None of the standard shellholders fit very well, .25ACP is closest but needs to be opened up a little. Supposedly RCBS makes them but they sent me a "5mm centerfire" shellholder that is marginal. I had to make an insert for the primer hole in the shellholder to support the case head during forming or the rim just rips right off.
There is no try; only do, or do not.
