Random thoughts - semi+lever/trombone/straight pull

A small, lightweight rifle/carbine.

Should accept all of:
Five-seveN magazines
Converted M1 carbine magazines
Longer (front to back) custom magazines
Alternative magazine arrangement:
P90/PS90 magazines, mounted on the side, rather than the top.
Dual side-mount magazines (left and right) with the ability to quickly select which to feed from.

Must be easy to SBR.

Must be easy to take down.

Should be capable of semi-auto.
Should have lever-action or trombone-action or straight-pull as FTF/FTE recovery and alternative manual cycling.

Safety selector should be "safe", "manual", "semi"
Manual mode should lock the bolt until positive action is taken to cycle the bolt by gross action (no fine motor skills required.)

Ideally, would duplicate reciever dimensions of an existing/common firearm.
Should have folding stock as option.

Steve's thoughts on smart guns

Goals of a smart gun:

• Always disallow unauthorized use. "Black list" and/or default determination.
• Always allow authorized users. "White list" of individuals and/or groups

The following must be balanced

• Officer/Operator safety
• Child safety

Must perform properly in all circumstances and conditions.

• Gloved (precludes many types of biometric identification)
• Any stance or position
• Naked (precludes jewelry and other ancilary transmitters.)
• Wet
• Cold
• Hot
• etc.

Unauthorized users must not be able to:

• Place the weapon off of safe mode
• Fire the weapon
• Rack the slide
• Remove the magazine
• Access the unit for reprogramming

A smart holster may also be of benefit.

Other desireable features:

• Low cost
• Easy to install
• Easy to reprogram
• Extended battery life

Rhineland Arms - Update

Rhineland Arms: "The AR57 upper is a completely new design by Rhineland Arms. The design allows for the use of our upper on any AR15/M16 lower (note class 2 will be available from another mfg) The rifle uses standard 30 or 50 round magazines that attach to the top of the rifle, cartridges feed from the top and eject out the bottom of the magazine well. The upper is available with a stainless steel 16.5' barrel, threaded for the standard M16 flash hider. Features include a scope rails on the top and bottom of the rifle with attachment points on the sides.
The AR57 upper is designed for heavy duty use in sandy or muddy environments. Other features include easy to diss-assemble design for rapid cleaning, that can be done in the field with no tools required. Internal small parts are standard off the shelf US military, except for the firing pin. Estimated release date is late April with a price around $550.
