FN FiveseveN Forums - Mean Green Clean Brass: "I have been searching for a way to quickly clean the 5.7x28mm brass. As we all know, with laquer coated cases, dirt and grime tends to stick to the laquer coating more easily than to brass and this is especially true with sizing lubes. Not wanting to get grime and lube all over the place, I set about looking for a way to clean my cases.

I started with dry corn cob in my vibratory tumbler. It sorta worked, but tended to thin the laquer coating to almost nothing within two reloadings and took a very long time. Putting cleaning agents in with the corn cob only exaserbated the mess and the amount of garbage stuck to the cases. I even tried the Iosso liquid case cleaner, which made the cases really brite but also removed about half of the laquer coat. So, after six months of occaisonal experimentation, I decided to put warm water and SIMPLE GREEN in my tumbler... It works EXCEPTIONALLY well without damaging the laquer coating.

If you don't have a wet media tumbler, just put the cases in a container with warm water and Simple Green at a ratio of 10 parts water to 1 part Simple Green for heavy cleaning, or 30 parts water to 1 part SG for lite cleaning. Agitate the cases with your fingers in a sideways fanning motion, and in 2 - 3 minutes, your brass is clean, inside and out. When in the tumbler, even the primer pockets are much cleaner and most of the garbage left falls out when dry with a few taps on a hard surface. It only takes a second to clean the primer pockets on my RCBS case prep center now instead of the usual 4 - 5 seconds before cleaning in Simple Green.

Give it a try, Simple Green WILL NOT harm the brass or laquer coating, and rinses clean with no residue. I have been doing this for a few weeks now and have proven on my Agencie's 300x stereo microscope that repeated"

My Reloading Bench

I wish that I had a picture of my first reloading bench. I will try to describe it briefly but cant possibly do it justice. The bench was small in size maybe 4 feet wide. I had all of my reloading essentials not even some of the things that most would consider essential in a plastic bin with a lid. In the bin, my supplies consisted of a few boxes of bullets, 2 or 3 pounds of powder, a wilson case trimmer, 1 reloading manual, dial calipers, a powder trickler, a .17 cal funnel, an RCBS scale, a Wilson chamfering tool, and a RCBS primer pocket wire brush gizmo. Behind the bench was a single target taped to the concrete block exterior wall. This target was a trophy to me at the time, but I couldnt even tell you where it is at this point. The Rockchucker press was mounted to the bench, and a Lee Perfect Powder Measure was mounted to a board for powder dispensing. When I first began reloading, I didn't even have the powder measure and I had to literally trickle the entire charge. I have a few small children and have to prioritize and limit my spending on reloading stuff. I was able to load quality ammunition even at my rather confined space with the limited equipment that I had.

I value input from people as knowledgable as yourself and AmmoGuide is much the better for it. But if I don't hear from you, I can't address any issues.

I believe you are correct that my original 5.7x28mm dimensions were hand-measured (submitted by a visitor over my Cartridge Creator http://ammoguide.com/runcreator.html ) but also believe the textual description immediately below the diagram noted same in the first sentence. Sometimes SAAMI case diagrams just can't be found, but I try to make it very clear if dimensions are hand-derived. I have published reference books that have hand-measured dimensions noted on some of their diagrams, so the practice is nothing new. Since originally putting up the 5.7x28mm page, my research has turned up what I believe are more reliable dimensions and I revised the diagram and text accordingly. I would very much appreciate your review...

I really do appreciate what you've done with Ammoguide, and no flame was intended. If anything, I suspect that the source that you used for the 5.7x28mm info was potentially flawed (from a reloader's point of view.) It looks like you might have used the data from Cartriges of the World 10th edition, which has specs on the
first generation SS90 ammo (not the current generation SS190, L191, SS192, SB193, T194, etc.) You didn't list the source of your information in the Ammoguide entry, so my suspicicions may be wrong.

For example, when I used a micrometer on current factory cartriges that I've fed representatives through my own pistol, the bullets mic out to .224" I've had a devil of a time finding official specs on what FN/Olin/Winchester are currently
producing.
Again, I didn't intend to flame Ammoguide, I just haven't been able to resolve some of the discrepancies that I've observed, and I was trying to be cautious about providing reloading information on the Internet when I had questions myself. I'll add a note of explanation to the blog entry, and clean up my language. :-) Anything you can do on your end would be greatly appreciated too.
