My notes (and other findings) related to the FN 5.7x28mm Weapon System (Ammunition, Five-seveN pistol, P90 PDW, PS90 carbine, CMMG Banshee Mk57, SCHV weapons in general, conversion of other weapons, accessories, reloading, etc.)

Singapore Technologies - Squad Support Weapon (SSW)
Singapore Technologies - Squad Support Weapon (SSW): "Squad Support Weapon (SSW)
The SSW was conceptualised specifically for military operations in urban terrain (MOUT). Although the idea of a dual calibre weapon is not new, ST Kinetics' SSW is the only infantry weapon developed in Asia with a Fire Control System (FCS) that fires next generation programmable ammunition like the 40mm Air Bursting Munition (ABM) directly from a handheld system. Weighing only 6kg with a full load 4 x 40mm rounds and 20 x 5.7mm rounds, the SSW is hassle-free, intuitive to use, and short and light enough to be carried and efficiently deployed by individual soldiers even in confined spaces.
Improved Lethality
The SSW has a built-in miniaturised FCS for better accuracy, reliability and improved probability of a first time hit. The FCS features advanced electronics to ensure quick target acquisition and accurate delivery of fire. It helps the user to compute the range using a laser range finder, and programmes ammunition quickly and accurately. It is designed with an automatic ammunition recognition device to help overcome any human errors that might compromise safety and reliability.
In its grenade launcher mode, ST Kinetics' SSW fires existing 40mm low velocity and a new medium velocity round, ABM and conventional grenades. Medium velocity rounds offer users a longer range. Coupled with an FCS, it also offers increased accuracy. This offers an unprecedented lethality in personal defence weapons.
With an ABM capability built into a handheld system, soldiers are now equipped with greater lethality to overcome targets located in areas such as rooftops or windows beyond the reaches of conventional ammunition. The ABM is particularly effective where targets are situated in difficult or closed terrain such as bunkers and caves, as evidenced in r"

FN Herstal's 5.7 System has proved itself through an extensive series of tests overseen and verified by organisations and authorities from around the world.
Much has been said about the choice of NATO not to take a decision about the standardisation of the new PDW caliber. The story goes back to 1990 with the publication of NATO Doc D296 defining the requests of the personal defence weapon as a replacement for the caliber 9mm, declared obsolete and ineffective in the face of new threats and the emergence of new ballistic protections.
Based on those requirements, FN Herstal launched its 5.7 System, comprising a submachine gun - the P90 - and a pistol - the Five-seveN. Both of these shoot a revolutionary cartridge of 5.7x28mm calibre - the SS190, defeating the new CRISAT target defined by NATO. The inherent qualities of this system gained it immediate interest all over the world, particularly from special forces.
In 1999, other competitors had come on the scene such as the 4.6x30mm caliber. Blocked in its decision process due to a change of standardisation rules, NATO decided to launch a competition between interested candidates. The first tests were made in the UK but the main evaluation was performed in France in 2002 by the ETBS (where six-month tests, comprising 22 different tests took place) and by a quick reaction team (QRT) designed by Nato NAAG in 2003.
Although the QRT clearly mentioned its preferences for the 5.7x28mm caliber, the standardisation process seems to be definitively interrupted.
Brief analysis of ETBS testing
ETBS testing has underlined the following positive points:
Greater effectiveness of the 5.7mm calibre against unprotected targets and equal against protected targets; energy deposit much higher for the 5.7mm

http://everything2.org/index.pl?node=5.7x28%20mm: "Fabrique Nationale was one of two companies (the other being Giat of France) approached in the mid-eighties by NATO planners to solve two distinct problems which arose with military small arms. The first was the ability to arm soldiers whose mission objectives called for the use of both semi-automatic pistols and select-fire assault rifles. The second was the need to combat the increasing proliferation of Level II Kevlar vests and PASGT helmets.
In the past, when a soldier went into a special operations mission, ve often carried an assault rifle utilizing 5.56x45 mm ammunition, and a sidearm which used anything from 9mm to .45 ACP. This was a fine setup, but it required carrying two different kinds of ammunition, and the weight and size of the other ammunition put a limit on how much could be carried. Further, if the primary weapon was a 9mm based submachine gun, such as a Heckler and Koch MP5, they would lose the armor-penetrating ability of the 5.56 NATO rounds.
Fabrique Nationale sought to solve these problems by developing a round which possessed excellent ballistics, small size, and would be equally effective when chambered in a submachine gun or pistol. They answered NATO with the 5.7x28 mm round. It was first demonstrated in 1995 with the FN P90 submachine gun, and later in the Five-seveN pistol.
There are currently three varieties of the 5.7x28 mm round. The raw technical specs of the round are as follows.
SS190 - Standard
Bullet Type - FMJ
Cartridge Length - 40.5 mm
Round Weight - 98 grains
Projectile Weight - 31 grains
Muzzle velocity - 715 m/s for P90, 650 m/s for Five-seveN
Penetration - 48 layers of kevlar at 200 m
L191 - Tracer (color coded red)
Bullet Type - Tracer
Cartridge Length - 40.5 mm
Round Weight - 98 grains
Projectile Weight - 31 grain"

FN Five SeveN Range Report Part I - 1911Forum: "FN Five SeveN Range Report Part I
I purchased an FN 5.7 today and decided to post some thoughts. This is part one as I have not fired it yet.
The 5.7 comes in a neat little kit with 3 mags, cleaning kit, gun, sight adjustment tool, and cable lock. Also included is a letter that states that it is FN policy for the 5.7 to be restricted to LEO only and requests information about the purchaser. The letter states that FN intends on following up on the guns sales to determine if the dealers and distributors are following protocol. For our purposes I will refrain from disclosing my status or the source of the firearm.
First impression is this a very neat gun. Clean lines, extremely light, and well thought out. The model I have includes the single action trigger pack and adjustable sights. The trigger has creep but has a nice say 4+# break. accuracy will not be hindered by the trigger. The sights are also very good with the front sight being taller than most due to the step down in the frame.
The ambi safety is crisp and simple to operate. You can use the strong side safety lever as an indexing point while keeping your finger off the trigger and disengage the safety as you acquire your target.
Field stripping is similar to the Glock family but you only need to press to the rear a single button while keeping the slide partially to the rear, unlike the two points you must pull down at the same time on a Glock.
The gun is totally covered in 'plastic' if you will allow me to call it that. The slide (see picture) is thin steel but has a plastic covering. This contributes to the clean lines and good feel of the gun, but the slides covering is not evenly applied. Look at the left and right side pictures of the gun. You can see the gap between the slide and fra"

I think that a smaller case capacity and a shorter casing would help to further lower the MV. Something like a necked down .25 ACP (.25 Auto)casing or a shortened 5.7x28mm (FN PDW/Five seveN cartridge - see http://www.impactguns.com/store/10700014BX.html). Note that the 5.7x28 has an even lower MV than the .22 CCM - but still a little higher than that for a .22 LR. The 5.7x28 also appears to have a proprietary bolt face - .305' (close to the .302' of the .25 Auto). The OAL of the 5.7x28 casing is in the neighborhood of 1.133'
It might be easier to shorten a .221 Fireball casing. Brass is easier to find, and suitable rifle bolt faces are more available."

FN FiveseveN Forums - Detailed dissassembly: "Detailed dissassembly
I couldn't resist the urge to improve the trigger so I took my USG apart last night
Here's how:
1. Remove fire control module- It is held in place by the second pin from the rear of the pistol. To remove the pin gently lift on on retaining/slide release spring with a credit card something else very thin and push the pin out from right to left. Pull the module up and out out, very little force is required.
2. Note the relationship of the sear and firing pin safety spring. Release tension from FPS spring and remove. Lift out FPS lever. Lift/remove sear pin, sear and spring will slide out of bottom of module.
3. Remove hammer by releasing tension(use your fingernail) on spring and removing the small pin it rests on. Remove hammer pin and spring.
It should take about five minutes.
Reassemble in reverse order. NOTE. when re inserting the module into the frame be sure the sear pin spring engages the frame properly or you will not have spring tension on the sear(you can guess how I figured that out!) You should feel the spring tension when re inserting the module.
This pistol is very easy to strip and assemble. Alot easier than the Sigs or USP I worked on.
I polished just the sear/hammer engagement.
Before- 5.3 lbs gritty
After- 4.6 lbs very smooth
Note I wrote polish- DO NOT REMOVE METAL.
I'll go back and polish all of the mating surfaces tonight. I'm expecting about a 4lb pull that is super smooth.
Hope this helps anyone who's interested

Officer Safety Items
A bit of hype in the actual description.
Officer Safety Items: "BODY ARMOR DEFEATING HANDGUN
On 10/15/04, the Trumbull Police Dept seized a FN Herstal pistol model #57 in 5.7mm caliber loaded with 5.7 x 28mm rounds. This is a relatively new caliber which was specifically designed to defeat body armor, according to the company's website. The 5.7x28 mm round currently comes in four variants, which are the ss190ap, the l191 tracer, the SB sub-sonic and the ss1902 duty/training ball ammunition. The ss190ap ammunition is advertised as being able to penetrate 48 layers of Kevlar at 50 meters when fired from the model 57 pistol; however tests revealed that the ss192 training ammo also penetrated one panel of a Threat Level 2 vest and nearly exited the second panel at a range of seven yards. A recent article in a police magazine indicated that the ss190ap round penetrated completely through 2 overlapped Threat Level 2 vests. Sales of this weapon in the U.S. have increased tremendously according to the manufacturer.
Description:This may be the closet thing to a laser gun! It's the new Five-SeveN IOM from FN Herstal. It features a new caliber 5.7X28mm SS192 which reaches over 2100FPS. FN says this gun has little or no recoil so you can stay on target. The IOM is a single action and has an ambidextrous safety, fully adjustable rear sight, three 10 rd mags, and cleaning kit. Its made of a very light polymer and easy to take down for cleaning.

Shoot-out at Blackwater
Shoot-out at Blackwater: "COMPLETE LINEUP
Along with the featured HV-40 and M2QCB, FNH gave our evaluators opportunities to test-fire a broad assortment of weapons from the company's lineup. The ever-popular P-90 subgun and Five-seveN pistol, both of which feed on 5.7-by-28mm ammo, earned typical accolades from the evaluators (see last year's Shoot-out report and video). The P-90, which carries a 50-round magazine atop the weapon, 'should be made available to ALL aircrew members and anyone else who deals with limited cockpit or turret space,' an evaluator noted.
The P-90 'is a great weapon for military vehicle crew members operating in tight quarters,' one of his colleagues echoed. 'The small, lightweight 5.7 rounds are extremely lethal and can defeat Class IIIA body armor out to 200 meters.'
A third evaluator a regular at past Shoot-outs had this to say about the P-90: 'For the past several years this weapon has been continually improved and received high praise. Based on the problems we're having in Iraq with people in vehicles trying to defend themselves during close-quarters ambushes, one has to wonder: When will the Army shed its 'white collar welfare' mind-set and seriously look at this weapon?'"

Yep, that's it
[Some of the facts/details aren't quite right, here - beware.]
Yep, that's it: "While HECKLER&KOCH will make us wait at least until next year to see the first prototypes of civilian-grade G36 and XM8 rifles, FN of Belgium is already giving us what we want, with the PS-90 and the P-2000.
The PS-90 is a sporter version of the P90 submachinegun. It will take the same .5'8x42mm-FN cartridge, from the same P90 clear plastic 52-rounder magazines; the SS193 ammo, with metal ball and tungsten core penetrator, being an armor-piercing special cartridge, is forbidden by law in many countries, including USA and Italy; FN has already intention to throw on the civilian market the SB193 cartridge (Ball), which has no tungsten penetrator.
The PS-90 is basically a P90 submachinegun with semiauto fire capabilities only and a 12' barrel. Basically it looks like a P90 submachinegun with a sound suppressor attached, isn't it? For Italian firearms owners: should the PS-90 hit our shores, it would be short enough to be catalogued and sold as a PISTOL, not as a rifle; thus, it would have no 'maximum' ammo capacity (which is 10 rounds for long arms in Italy). This means that we'd be able to sport standard P90 52-rounder magazines.
The P-2000 is the sporter version of the FN F2000 modular bull-pup assault rifle. It has no selective-fire capabilities, fires the .5'56x45mm-NATO ammunition, feeding from STANAG-compliant magazines. The weapon will be equipped with MIL-STD Picatinny upper rail, and standard iron sights. It will be sold with a 4x tunnel optic lenses sight; the electronic FCS (Fire Control System) developed and provided by MEOPTA Contravers for the military F2000 is unlikely to be sold to civilians, due to the high cost, but its protective plastic shell might be, and it is compatible with the use of the standard 4x optic sight, so that anybody will be able to use them an"

I just bought a scope rail for my Walther P-22 pistol. Looking at it when I opened the package I thought it would fit on my 5-7. IT DOES ***as long as you remove the front sight***.
To remove the front sight place the pistol on your workbench CUSHIONED BY A TOWEL FOLDED INTO QUARTERS. Ensure that the pistol in on its right side, so that the left side is up. Using a BRASS DRIFT PIN drive out the pin on the slide near the front of the rear site. USE ONLY BRASS AS STEEL WILL MAR METAL AND BRASS IS SOFT ENOUGH IT WILL NOT. Unscrew the rear site and remove screw and spring. Lift the slide cover up from the rear and slide towards the front sight. Remove the loaded chamber indicator and spring.
Remove the slide from the gun. In a vise WITH CUSHIONED JAWS (wood, rubber, etc) clamp the slide on either side and using a BRASS PUNCH remove the front site assembly. Reinstall the slide cover the reverse of removal.
When your 5-7 is reassembled put the scope rail together with ALL pieces including the spacer at the rear. The spacer is polymer as is the slide cover and I believe that with the addition of molybendmen dry lubricants (or graphite) there will be no damage to the cover and perhaps only a little wear.
I did this this afternoon and put my holosite on my 5-7. It works fine.
Even if the slide cover is worn, replacements are available from FN's repair department at a reasonable cost.

FN FiveseveN Forums - Scope rail for 5-7 is AVAILABLE (by modification): "Scope rail for 5-7 is AVAILABLE (by modification)
Reader [aaron rasmussen] and his brother Ezra built this awesome robotic sentry gun. The gun is an airsoft replica of an FN P90 and fires 6mm BBs. Pan and tilt are controlled by two hobby servos using a simple controller. Aaron wrote custom software to watch the usb webcam and track targets. There is a video on the site of it being tested on Ezra. Where are hordes of aliens when you need them?"
